How To Get Cat Pee Out of a Rug Quickly and Perfectly

“What greater gift than the love of a cat.”

Charles Dickens, English Author

Cats are the greatest source of joy and pleasure in our homes. Just to have one of these lovely creatures in our homes is a great blessing, but it could lead to some cat-astrophes in your house like cat pee on the rug. ??

Cats have always been the centerpiece of our lives so that ancient Egyptians would worship them as gods! They still play a significant role in our literature, cinema, and culture.

Studies have shown, sharing your home with a feline fur-end is very beneficial for your mental health.

Cats are usually very independent and neat animals. And they’re quite easily trained to use the litter box.

But Unfur-tunately some cats might mistake your rugs with their toilette. That cat pee stain not only leaves an intense stink but also damages the rug and floor underneath.

In this blog, I’m gonna give you some working tips on how to get a cat to stop peeing on a rug. I’ll also tell you how to remove cat urine smell from a rug purr-fectly. ?✅

How to Stop a Cat From Peeing on Rugs?

Prevention is better than cure. So you should know how to prevent your cat from making such troubles before tackling the cat pee stains.

Cat pee on a rug could be a sign of your cat’s medical or behavior problem. Typically, cats pee in a quiet and remote place and cover it with dust.

If your cat pees on the rug, it might be a bladder dysfunction, diabetes, or maybe blindness.

So a simple checkup by the vet would help you make sure nothing is wrong with your kitty’s health. ?

If your cat pees outside the litter box and nothing is wrong with the cat’s health, maybe the litter box is the problem. Cats are very clever and hygienic, so they’ll stay away from a dirty litter box which other cats also use.

If your just adopted cat keeps peeing on the rug, the reason might be the type of litter box. So change the type of litter box and see which one is your kitty’s favorite.

The location of the litter box is also important to get a cat to stop peeing on your rug.

If the litter box is in a remote part of the house with no air circulation, or the box is too small, your cat would have no desire to use it.

And as the final hack, bribe them! Bribery works so well on cats, so put some treats around the litter box to encourage them to use it instead of your precious rugs.

But urine accidents happen one way or another, so you’d also better be prepared for them once they occur.

How to Get Cat Urine Smell out of Rug When The Stain Is Fresh

It’s worth it to know that cats have evolved in deserts, so they are designed to lose the mew-nimum amount of water. That harsh environment has also turned them into very private animals that mark their territory by spraying on different spots.

The cat pee is much more intense than other animals. It contains uric acids that penetrate the rug fibers and burn the wool and silk threads, as well as causing color run.

You should be quick as possible once you notice the cat pee smell in your house.

When the urine accident is still fresh, you can remove it with a simple solution at home. Otherwise, the urine dries out inside the rug and turns into crystals that only a rug expert can remove.

You’re gonna need:

One box of baking soda | One box of paper towel or a clean terry cloth | one cup of white vinegar | one cup of lukewarm tap water | a spray bottle

1.

The whole cat pee bulk must be gone. Keep blotting on it firmly with paper towels until it’s all dry.

Avoid scrubbing the stain or pouring warm water on it because it would expand the stain and make it stick to the rug.

Note: This might not work on all rugs. Especially on antique and delicate rugs, blotting might spread the stain and cause color bleeding.

2.

After the stained area is dried by blotting paper towels on it, mix equal shares of white vinegar and tap water in a spray bottle.

Then spray the whole area and let it sit for 3-5 minutes.

Note: Based on your area rug’s age, weave, and material, vinegar might cause severe chemical reactions on it and cause color bleeding even if it’s sat for a few minutes. So consult with a rug expert before you use this solution.

3.

Now the acids in the vinegar have dissolved the wicked uric acid and proteins of the cat pee.

However, the vinegar itself is acidic and dangerous to your rug if it sits for a long while.

So cover the area entirely with baking soda and let it sit for a couple of hours. It neutralizes the residual vinegar acids and absorbs the remaining moisture.

4.

Finally, remove the whole thing by vacuum cleaning.

How to Get Cat Pee Smell Out of Rug After It Has Dried

This one is quite tricky. If you do not notice the accident and the cat urine stain is left for a long while, the liquid penetrates the rug’s construction and crystallizes there.

These tiny crystals won’t come out by vacuuming. They keep damaging the rug fibers with the unbalanced pH level and leave an awful odor each time they’re exposed to dampness.

Flooding is the only solution here which means entirely soaking the stained rug into the water to loosen the cat pee crystals and remove them from the rug.

You can’t do that in your house, and even if you could, you wouldn’t be able to extract the water from the rug properly. Not to mention that dried cat pee stains need more special solutions to dissolve.

That’s why I recommend you to get a professional rug cleaning service when the stain has dried out.

Make sure the company specializes in rug cleaning, not dry cleaning or carpet cleaning. That is because their methods might damage the delicate fibers of your silk and wool rugs beyond repair.

The rug cleaning solution must be harmless as well. If they use a harsh chemical on the stain, it will cause color run in the rug and respiratory problems for your cat.
