Mumtaz Mahal
Shahjahan on globe, mid 17th century
Under Mughal rule, Agra became a center for learning, arts, commerce, and religion, and saw the construction of the Agra Fort, Sikandra and Agra’s most prized monument, the Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favorite empress, Momtaz Mahal.

Uttar Pradesh province used to be a major center for carpet weaving since the Mughal Era. The Mughal emperors were deeply under the Persian cultural influence. They used to buy not only Persian royal carpets but also Iranian master-weavers and designers.

Uttar Pradesh province kept its position as the Indian biggest carpet center with some interruptions like the one occurred after the separation of Pakistan which led to immigration of Muslim weavers from Agra. Indians, however, managed to renovate the industry and today the province is the biggest weaving center of India again.

Technical aspects and the structure of Agra Rugs

Agra knot density is between 120 and 245 knots per square inch. Lots of the productions are single-wefted but double-wefted ridged-back structure could also be found. Large carpet sizes are common as well as area rugs.

Double-weave structure is common in Agra which leads to an inferior quality in comparison to the Persian rugs with similar designs. These are good choices for those who want a Persian designed rug with a lower price.

Agra’s designs based on Persian designs do not follow necessarily the original palettes. Rust and yellow (Tan) make a common combination in Agra used in both vase designs and medallion ones. Unlike Persian designs, here the patterns are done without outlines. This may lead to a more naturalistic feature.
